Home Vineyard

The Home Vineyard is unique in many ways. Within its tiny 1/4 acre, planted in 1995 and 1998, there are 6 clones and 3 varieties. While most vineyard blocks in California are planted with a single clone of Pinot Noir, many of Burgundy’s greatest vineyards are planted with a mix of clones, or “Selection Massale”, that are picked together. Similarly, the Home Vineyard is harvested in one batch and fermented as a field blend of diverse vines.

While the Home Vineyard enjoys the same mild, consistent climate as the Family Farm vineyard, it is situated on a different soil type. The decomposed sandstone of the Whiskey Hill formation and clay loam topsoil provide an elegant wine of earthy complexity, powdery aromatics and beautiful red and black fruit.

After years of experimentation, we have learned that the Home Vineyard produces its best wine from 100% whole-cluster fermentations and little new oak influence. This hands-off approach allows its layered, elegant earthy character to really shine.

In 2007, we were able to expand the Home Vineyard by adding 1.4 acres of very tightly spaced 4' x 4.5' rows of “Suitcase” clones. We expect these new vines to begin contributing grapes in 2009 or 2010, which will allow us to increase production beyond the current single barrel.
