Wines

Alesia

While much of our focus is on winegrowing for our Rhys estate-managed vineyards, we also enjoy exploring distinctive California locations outside the Santa Cruz Mountains. In particular we love the seductive beauty of Pinot Noir and Syrah from the Sonoma Coast and the utterly unique expression of Syrah from the Santa Lucia Highlands. We call these wines made from purchased grapes “Alesia.”

Each Alesia wine is made with the same philosophy as our estate grown wines – concentration from low yields and pure, fresh fruit flavors.

Fairview Ranch

Fairview Ranch is located near the town of Gonzales in the Santa Lucia Highlands. The vineyard is sited on an alluvial fan of decomposed granitic soil that experiences consistently cool weather moderated by nearby Monterey Bay. This combination of soil and climate produces one of the most identifiably unique expressions of Syrah in the world. In particular, we love the intriguing citrus notes and pronounced minerality of this wine.

Falstaff Road Vineyard

Many people are surprised to learn just how cool some of California’s microclimates can be. In particular, the area around Freestone California is one of the coolest Pinot growing regions in the world. These conditions, combined with classic Goldridge soils, attracted us to this beautiful vineyard owned by Ron and Judy Lougheed. Without their constant, dedicated attention, it would simply not be possible to successfully grow this Pinot “on the edge”. We hope you enjoy the beautiful balance and fresh red and black fruit basket of this Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.

Chileno Valley

The Chileno Valley begins in Marin and slowly winds its way toward the Pacific Ocean through Southernmost Sonoma County. This area sees a great deal of cooling Marine influence and contains patches of the Steinbeck series of eroded sandstone soils. These conditions contribute to a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir with excellent structure for aging while Chileno Valley Syrah offers distinctly wild, Northern Rhone-like aromatics of beef and game.
